Welcome to Mereen, the slave city.
Mereen is indeed city of Split, where slaves really used to live 17000 years ago. Thanks to Roman Emperor Diocletian, who recognized this are as an ideal place to build his retirement residence. Eventually, palace became a medieval city. Initially people lived only within the walls of the palace, but after palace became too crowded, city started to spread. Today Split is Mediterranean city of around 170 thousand people, second largest city in Croatia.
Game of Thrones hunters recognized Split as a perfect setting for the streets of Mereen. And the dragons, stars of the show – they were locked in the basement of the palace. You will visit real place – without photo shop – where the dragons were locked while they were out of control.
Fourteen kilometers from Split there is fortress Klis, built for the defense against Ottoman Empire in 15th century. Klis was used for outer scenes of Merreen, including the epic scene when mother of dragons set the city free of slave masters. From the fortress you have the view to Split and nearby islands, and also to the quarry in which Dario Nahaaris had fight with one of the slave masters.
Third location on this tour is on the river where romantic scene took place – do you remember the scene when Grey Warm warched Misandrei taking a bath? We cannot leave that scene out of this tour.
