SPLIT AND HAJDUK

Have you noticed all the graffiti around Split? Most of them are about football club from Split, Hajduk. Hajduk is named after fighters for freedom in Balkans, predominantly against Ottomans. Originally it is Turkish word for bandits. Hajduk was founded in 1911 in Prague by four students from Split at the local club Flek. Football club Hajduk until today has built the reputation by fighting against injustice done against people of Balkans. According to their professor Hajduk name symbolizes:

“…which is best in our people: bravery, humanity, friendship, love of freedom, defiance to powers and protection of the weak”. Hajduk can be personified in the character of Robin Hood.

Today, there is movement Naš Hajduk that is representing the movement in society against corny capitalism, corruption and nepotism.
